In the summer, everyone wants to be outdoors, enjoying the sunshine. As part of their plans to enjoy the summer sun, there are thousands of events across the country every summer. Not to mention all the verandas, patios, and beer gardens restaurants have set up for outdoor dining. Unfortunately, not everyone enjoys the summer heat. Instead of becoming a pleasant way for people to spend a day or enjoy a meal, outdoor events and venues can become stiflingly unpleasant. If only there were a way to enjoy time outside in the summer without the oppressive heat.
Oh wait, there is! You just need a Portacool portable evaporative cooler. These evaporative coolers can create islands of cool where people can stop and rest, enjoying your venue and events in the sun without having to suffer from the tremendous heat that summer can bring. Portacool evaporative air coolers are very efficient to run, and they’re made in the USA at our Center, Texas manufacturing facility.
The Portacool® 510 Portable Evaporative Cooler is a compact unit that offers powerful cooling capacity. It cools up to 300 sq. ft., making it ideal for a patio that accommodates 2–4 people. Equipped with Portacool evaporative media, oscillating louvers, water fill door, low-water shutoff and sturdy casters, the Portacool™ 510 is designed to provide maximum cooling comfort. This unit features a manual fill door with no hose connection. No assembly required.
It’s hard for people to enjoy themselves outside when the heat is high. That’s because the human body needs to shed excess heat, and its ability to lose heat starts dropping when the temperature exceeds 75°F.
When people get hot, they have a hard time enjoying themselves. The body shifts blood flow from the brain and muscles to the skin to try to shed more heat. People get tired and lose the ability to notice details. They also lose interest in most forms of activity. They stop paying attention to, or even seeing, advertising, merchandise, or attractions at an outdoor event.
When temperatures reach 95°F, the only way the body can lose heat is through sweat. While sweat can help people keep cool, it’s also unpleasant for most people. Once their clothes get soaked and they have a sense of being coated with sweat, they just want to go home, abandoning your venue or event instead of spending more time (and money).
It’s not just patrons that suffer from the heat. Your employees will find it hard to work when the heat increases. Productivity can drop by 30% when the heat reaches 100°F. Plus, employees are more likely to make mistakes, and they can experience heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heatstroke from working in the heat.
Sweat is the one way the body can keep losing heat as temperatures climb. Sweat cools the body with evaporation. Turning water into a gas takes the same amount of energy whether you’re boiling water in a kettle or evaporating it naturally with hot air. When air loses that energy, it cools immediately. This strategy is so effective that all land plants and animals use it in some form to keep themselves cool.
While sweating is unpleasant for most people, there’s a way to get the same cooling effect without all that perspiration. Evaporative coolers work by pulling hot air over a cooling medium, similar to a sponge. As the air encounters water soaked into the medium, that water evaporates, removing heat from the air. The fan then pushes the cool air out, where it can dramatically reduce the temperature of a large area.
You can use evaporative coolers to create “chill zones” at an outdoor event or venue. A large evaporative cooler can provide significant cooling even outdoors, keeping a patio, veranda, or biergarten significantly cooler than the ambient temperature.
Hotel breezeways benefit especially from evaporative coolers. While they are open and have access to outside air, they’re also partially enclosed, which traps some amount of cool air, helping them stay comfortable with a relatively low influx of cool air.
There are many ways to help people cool down, but of all the solutions, evaporative coolers are the most efficient and effective.
First, you might try simple fans. A fan can work to some extent, but it only moves hot air around. This can help people sweat more effectively, but it rarely makes them feel more comfortable. Cooling is still limited, and people are still experiencing the side effects of profuse sweating.
You might think that providing misters will help. They can, but they are like supplemental sweat and don’t necessarily make people feel better. In addition, they interfere with people eating and drinking and can damage purchases that are vulnerable to water.
You might then think about an air conditioner. Air conditioners can cool the air, but they are very inefficient. They require tremendous amounts of energy to cool even a small amount of air, and they can’t provide significant cooling unless they can collect their cooled air in an enclosed place. Plus, most of the energy AC uses will then turn into heat. If the AC unit is in the same place you’re trying to cool, it can be counterproductive.
An evaporative cooler works great in both inside and outside spaces. As long as it has access to outdoor air to evaporate the water, it can keep producing cool air. Because most of the energy comes from the hot air, evaporative coolers don’t become significant heat sources. Also, the air that emerges from the evaporative cooler does not feel wet. People can eat in front of the cooler and stay dry.
